CATBALOGAN CITY, Samar — Hours after the armed encounter that left three alleged members of the New People’s Army neutralized in Barangay Pange, Jaro, Leyte, the 8th Infantry Division confirms that pursuit and clearing operations are ongoing to ensure no remaining armed elements continue to threaten nearby communities.
In an update released on November 18, Major Oscarito Tobias, 8ID Public Affairs Office Chief, said government forces remain on heightened alert as they scour possible withdrawal routes used by remnants of the Island Committee Levox under the Eastern VISAYAS Regional Party Committee ( EVRPC).
“Our troops are now conducting expanded security operations to prevent any regrouping of the armed elements. We received reports from residents that this group had been coercing Barangay folks in recent weeks, so we are making sure they can no longer reestablish influence,’ Maj. Tobias said.
He confirmed that the situation in Barangay Pange has already stabilized hours after the firefight, and soldiers have strengthened patrols to reassure residents affected by the clash.
Major Tobias said that coordination with the Local Government Unit of Jaro, Leyte, is ongoing to finalize the identification, documentation, and handling of the remains of the three slain CNTs.
“The 8ID maintains full adherence to International Humanitarian Law. We are working closely with the LGU to notify the families of the deceased and ensure dignified burial arrangements,” he added.
Recovered items, including two caliber .45 pistols, ammunition, and personal belongings, have been turned over for processing as part of the ongoing investigation.
Maj. Tobias emphasized that without the vigilance of local residents, the armed group could have continued their coercion and influence operations in isolated communities.
“The rapid response of our troops was made possible because civilians refused to be intimidated. Their courage allowed us to thwart possible future attacks and protect the community,” he said.
The Division Public Affairs Office reiterated the earlier message of 8ID Commander Major General Adonis Ariel Orio encouraging remaining rebels to abandon armed struggle.
Maj. Tobias underscored that the government’s reintegration programs-including the National Amnesty Program and E-CLIP-remain open and accessible.
“We urge the remaining members of IC Levox to come forward. The government is ready to help you rebuild your lives peacefully,” he stressed.
As of November 17, 8ID units under the 802nd “Peerless” Brigade and 93rd “Bantay Kapayapaan” Battalion remain deployed in the hinterlands of Jaro to ensure no remnants of the armed groups can return to threaten civilians.
Maj. Tobias appealed to the public to maintain vigilance and continue reporting any suspicious activities to authorities.
“Our line remains open. Peace and security are a shared responsibility, and together we can ensure that our communities remain safe,” he said.
