BASEY, SAMAR — The municipality of Basey, Samar, commemorated the 12th anniversary of Super Typhoon Yolanda with a candle lighting ceremony on November 8, 2025, held at the Basey Municipal Grounds to honor the victims and reaffirm the community’s commitment to disaster readiness.

Despite strong winds that swept through the area—locally described as “ka makusog nga paghinangin nga tarahiti”—residents, municipal officials, employees, and uniformed personnel gathered for the solemn event to remember those who lost their lives during the devastating typhoon in 2013.
Mayor Luz Ponferrada led the commemoration and emphasized the importance of recalling not only the victims but also those who helped during the rescue and recovery operations following the disaster. She expressed gratitude to individuals and organizations that continue to support Basey’s recovery and resilience efforts.
Mayor Ponferrada also highlighted the municipality’s proactive disaster preparedness programs aimed at protecting residents and ensuring a swift response during emergencies. The initiative underscores the local government’s goal of strengthening community resilience and individual readiness in the face of future calamities.
“The legacy of Yolanda reminds us that preparedness saves lives,” Mayor Ponferrada said. “We must remain vigilant and ready to protect one another.”
The annual candle lighting activity has become a long-standing tradition in Basey, serving as both a remembrance of loss and a commitment to resilience.
