Tacloban City – Public transportation resumed using the San Juanico Bridge on December 12, 2025, following an inspection by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Department of Public Works and Highways Secretary Vince Dizon. Currently, vehicles weighing fifteen tons or less are permitted to cross.
This decision allows direct access for all public utility vehicle operators traveling between Samar/Leyte, as well as bus operators servicing routes to and from Manila.
A representative from land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board in Region V111 (LTFRB-8) expressed excitement about the resumption of service for businesses and customers in the region.
Prior to this reopening, passengers had to switch vehicles to reach their final destination, resulting in additional travel burdens and costs. The direct crossings will now alleviate this burden by eliminating the need for multiple vehicle transfers and reducing overall traveling expenses.
Officials explained that the reopening of the San Juanico Bridge is a crucial step in restoring normal vehicle movement and enhancing safety with the weight restrictions in place. This reinstituted policy at the San Juanico Bridge will play a key role in strengthening the economic and social ties between Samar and Leyte.
