ISABEL, Leyte — OCCCI once again displayed its superiority on the basketball court after defeating MYX Dental Clinic/Welec, 80-78, to capture the Sidlak Isabel Leyte Mayors Cup 2026 in a last, minute buzzer, beater game at the GNRC Isabel.
The basketball tournament was held from January 2 to 5, 2026, and featured four teams from different municipalities in the region: OCCCI, MYX Dental Clinic/Welec, JV Enterprises, and Coach K. The league followed a single, round elimination format, followed by the semifinals and finals, with every game drawing a large and excited crowd.
Before the championship game, JV Enterprises battled Coach K in the third-place playoff. The two teams were neck and neck until the halftime break, but JV Enterprises took control in the third quarter and sealed an 85-76 victory. JV Enterprises was awarded P100,000, while Coach K received P50, 000. Both teams were also given trophies.
The championship game remained tightly contested until the final buzzer, with OCCCI and MYX Dental trading leads and finishing each quarter with scores almost tied.
With less than 35 seconds to go, MYX Dental was leading by two points and seemed to have the victory in the bag.
However, OCCCIs Kenny Rogers Rocacurva, called the Halimaw of Camotes Island, went to the basket, scored while being fouled, and tied the game at 78. Rocacurva then added his free throw with 15. 4 seconds left, giving OCCCI a one-point lead. MYX Dental missed their last shot with 7. 7 seconds remaining and fouled.
OCCCI converted one more free throw and played good defense to win 80-78. Rocacurva had 23 points in the game and was named the Finals MVP.
OCCCI took home the championship trophy and the P200, 000 grand prize while MYX Dental was given P150,000 as the second-place team.
Mayor Bennet Pongos said that the Mayor’s Cup is more than just a basketball tournament for Isabel.
“Ang Mayor’s Cup dili lang kompetisyon sa basketball, kundi simbolo sa panaghiusa sa atong komunidad. Pinaagi sa sports, mapalambo nato ang disiplina, respeto ug maayong panaghiusa sa atong katawhan, ilabi na sa atong kabatan-onan” (The Mayor’s Cup isn’t just a basketball competition, but a symbol of unity in our community. Through sports, we can promote discipline, respect, and good unity among our people, especially our youth),” said Mayor Bennet Pongos.
The fiesta ended on a high note with the audience applauding the thrilling games and the great sportsmanship.
