TANAUAN CITY, Leyte — The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) stepped up its efforts to combat hunger in Tanauan on Thursday, March 19, by distributing food assistance to beneficiaries of the Walang Gutom Program in various barangays.
This initiative is part of the government’s Hunger Free 2027 program, which aims to address food insecurity and enhance nutrition in vulnerable communities nationwide. Each household received 25 kilograms of rice and groceries worth approximately P3,000, including vegetables, fruits, and meat, providing crucial support to families facing challenges in meeting their daily food requirements.
One of the recipients, Irene Sabio Oronos, 76, from Barangay Picas, expressed her appreciation for the assistance, mentioning that this was her second time receiving aid this year. She highlighted the importance of the aid in helping her cope with her inability to work on her farm due to illness. Beneficiaries were informed that the aid distribution would occur every two months.
DSWD officials emphasized that the program aims to provide continuous food assistance to help low-income families access nutritious food and enhance their overall well-being. They anticipate that the ongoing implementation of the program will contribute to long-term food security and improve the quality of life in communities like Tanauan.
Tanauan, Leyte, comprises 54 barangays and is home to 57,455 residents, many of whom are eligible beneficiaries of the program.
