TACLOBAN CITY — Local officials in Tacloban City are intensifying efforts to prevent rabies infections by expanding vaccination programs, improving stray animal management, and promoting responsible pet ownership.
The Tacloban City Veterinary Office has launched an enhanced anti-rabies campaign to safeguard the community.
Dr. Jodel Ty, head of Dog Pound and Animal Control Operations, outlined the city’s strategy during a press conference on March 4, 2026. The plan includes increasing vaccination coverage, monitoring animal bite cases, and enforcing stricter animal control measures in barangays.
Dr. Ty emphasized the need for collaboration between local authorities and pet owners to prevent rabies.
Vaccination teams will visit communities to administer anti-rabies shots to household pets, such as dogs and cats. Barangay representatives have been informed about vaccination schedules and the city’s livestock and animal census to improve monitoring.
Dr. Rogiel Mahait, head of the Issuance Division, encouraged residents to bring their pets for vaccination on March 19, highlighting its effectiveness in preventing rabies.
In addition to vaccination, the veterinary office is addressing stray animal issues through programs promoting responsible pet ownership.
Initiatives like “Cats Day” and “Dogs Day” offer free spaying and neutering services to control the stray animal population.
The Tacloban City Dog Pound plays a crucial role in managing stray animals, providing temporary housing and care for impounded dogs.
The facility closely monitors animals for health conditions, especially those involved in biting incidents.
Officials stressed the importance of seeking immediate medical attention for animal bites to prevent rabies infection.
Through these efforts, Tacloban City aims to strengthen its anti-rabies campaign and encourage proactive pet care among citizens.
