TANAUAN CITY, Leyte — More than 30 barangays in the municipality took part in the First Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill on March 12, 2026, showcasing strong community involvement in disaster preparedness efforts.

The event was organized by the Tanauan municipal government in collaboration with the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Municipal Local Government Operations Office as part of the nationwide initiative to enhance earthquake preparedness and promote safety.

Barangay officials, staff, and residents actively participated in the drill by practicing the life-saving “Drop, Cover, and Hold” procedure, which educates individuals on the appropriate actions to take during an earthquake.

The earthquake drill was carried out simultaneously in numerous barangays, including Barangay Killing, Binolo, Baras, Binongto-an, Bislig, Buntay, Cabalagnan, Cahumayhumayan, Cabuynan, Calsadahay, Canbalisara, Salvador, Guingauan, Hilagpad, Canramos, Lapay, Licod, Pago, Maribi, Malaguicay, Magay, Pasil, Sacme, San Victor, Santa Cruz, Talolora, Santo Niño, San Roque, Solano, Ada, Tugop, Antipolo, and the town proper.

The extensive participation of barangays underscored the municipality’s ongoing efforts to enhance disaster preparedness, particularly as numerous communities in the region face risks from natural disasters like flooding, storm surges, and landslides.

In Eastern Visayas, hundreds of barangays in Leyte are at high risk of flooding and rain-induced landslides, emphasizing the importance of regular disaster preparedness initiatives.

Local officials emphasized that the widespread involvement of barangays demonstrates Tanauan’s dedication to fostering a culture of preparedness, vigilance, and community resilience during emergencies such as earthquakes and other natural calamities.
