TACLO BAN CITY — After nearly a year of training, Eastern Visayas runner Chrissia Mae Tajarros once again proved she is among the country’s best young distance runners after winning the gold medal in the secondary girls’ 3,000-meter event of the 2026 Palarong Pambansa on Monday.

The 14-year-old athlete successfully defended the title she also won during last year’s Palaro in Ilocos Norte, giving Eastern Visayas its first gold medal in this year’s competition.

Moments after the race, Tajarros said the victory came from months of preparation and hard work.

“I trained for almost a year for this Palaro,” she said.

She thanked the people who stood behind her throughout her training, including regional sports officials, her coaches, trainers, and school officials.

Tajarros also shared the podium with fellow Eastern Visayas athlete Angel Lumacang, who won the silver medal. Charlene Cos of the Davao Region took home the bronze.

The Palarong Pambansa also opened competitions on Monday in several other events, including baseball, chess, boxing, softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, and Paragames.
