TACLOBAN CITY — The Tacloban City Government has activated inter-agency coordination and response protocols in preparation for an upcoming weather disturbance to ensure readiness, swift response, and zero casualties.
By issuing an executive order, the city mayor has instructed all relevant departments to work closely with the Tacloban City Risk Reduction and Management Office (CRRMO)to enhance monitoring and emergency response efforts.
In an interview on February 11, CRRMO Co-Chair Ildebrando Bernadas told The Vanguard that their office is responsible for informing local officials about potential hazards and recommending necessary actions to city departments.
“We promptly update the mayor and relevant agencies on the situation so that appropriate measures can be taken,” Bernadas stated.
The CRRMO leads in monitoring hazards and acts as the central coordinating body during emergencies. It may also suggest school closures in coordination with the Department of Education and school administrators, following safety protocols.
Bernadas stressed that advisories are issued only after consulting with relevant offices to ensure accuracy and avoid causing unnecessary panic.
The CRRMO assured residents that response teams are prepared to offer immediate assistance, especially in matters related to public safety. Special attention will be given to vulnerable groups, such as low-income families, by providing essential access to evacuation centers as directed by the mayor.
In addition to addressing the current weather disturbance, the city is focusing on enhancing long-term disaster preparedness efforts. An earthquake drill involving schools and businesses will be conducted on March 12 to improve readiness for seismic events.
Tacloban disaster risk reduction framework encompasses prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery efforts. The city is also working on enhancing its tsunami preparedness, given its location near the Pacific Ocean and Samar Island.
Tacloban has been invited to participate in the Tsunami Ready Philippines program, which aims to improve evacuation planning for coastal communities, such as San Jose.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed and visit the CRRMO office to learn about disaster preparedness measures and response protocols.
Bernadas emphasized the importance of proactive disaster management, highlighting that preparedness, coordination, and public cooperation are essential in protecting lives and properties in Tacloban.
