TACLOBAN CITY — Hundreds of participants from various government offices, barangays, and partner agencies gathered in Tacloban City on March 6 to officially launch the city’s celebration of the 2026 National Women’s Month with a lively Women’s Walk emphasizing unity and empowerment.
The 3-kilometer march kicked off along Magsaysay Boulevard and culminated at the Tacloban City Convention Center, symbolizing the community’s joint dedication to promoting gender equality and enhancing women’s participation in society.
Organized by the Tacloban City Population Office, the event marked the city’s official start to this year’s celebration themed “WE for Gender Equality and Inclusive Society,” with the sub-theme “Lead Like Babaylans, Filipinas.”
Participants included officials and staff from national government agencies, barangay councils, women’s groups, and city government employees. Representatives from the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Tacloban City office also participated, demonstrating strong inter-agency support for gender advocacy efforts.
Following the walk, a program was held where DILG Tacloban City Director Visitacion V. Giva encouraged participants to continue championing gender equality in their communities and workplaces. She stressed the ongoing journey towards true equality and the need for sustained commitment from women and their allies.
“Empowerment is a process that requires ongoing action, unity, and the courage to advocate for equal opportunities,’ Giva remarked, urging participants to remain active supporters of inclusive development.
The Tacloban City Police Office, under the leadership of City Director Noelito A. Getigan, also joined the event, showcasing the police force;s endorsement of initiatives promoting women’s empowerment and gender-sensitive governance.
Beyond the symbolic walk, the kickoff event underscored Tacloban City’s broader dedication to gender-responsive leadership and inclusive public service. Local officials highlighted the significant contributions of women in governance, community development, and nation-building.
