TACLOBAN CITY — A mother mourning the death of her son demanded justice in a serene village as a minor, known as “John Paul,” was laid to rest on April 25, after he died in an armed encounter that raised concerns about the recruitment of children in conflict zones.

John Paul was among those killed in an encounter in Barangay Caulayanan, Motiong Samar, on April 24, involving the 46th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army and an armed group.

With the assistance of the local government unit of San Jose de Buan, the young victim received a proper burial, offering some solace to his family. However, for his mother, Jessa, the anguish of losing her son in such circumstances remains overwhelming.

Despite her gratitude for the LGU’s support, Jessa recounted how her son was reportedly abandoned by the armed group that recruited him, leading to his tragic demise.

She questioned why those who recruited her son did not ensure his safety, leaving him vulnerable at a crucial moment. Jessa appealed to members of the armed group to surrender and avoid the same fate that befell her son, whom she believed was deceived into joining the movement.

Jessa also made a heartfelt plea to a nephew still involved in the armed group, urging him to return home before it’s too late, fearing another tragedy in their family.

The incident once again highlighted the issue of minors being recruited into armed conflict, a practice condemned as a violation of Philippine law and international child protection conventions.

The 8th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army condemned the recruitment of minors into armed struggle and called on armed groups to cease exploiting vulnerable youth.

Capt. Christopher B. Tataro, chief of the Division Public Affairs Office, mentioned that the military is actively engaging communities, raising public awareness, and safeguarding youth in conflict areas.

He encouraged families and communities to stay vigilant and report any suspected recruitment of minors, stressing the collective responsibility of protecting children. (Ronnie Yanuario)
