BASEY, Samar — The 63rd Infantry (Innovator) Battalion of the Philippine Army officially launched the observance of International Women’s Month with a ceremony that emphasized the increasing role of women in leadership, governance, and the security sector of the country.
The event held on March 2, 2026, at the battalion headquarters in Barangay Guirang, brought together military personnel, local officials, and female soldiers to highlight the importance of empowering women and enhancing their involvement in nation-building. Pinabacdao Mayor Viannery Dy Mabag, the first female mayor of the municipality, served as the guest of honor and speaker, symbolizing the growing leadership positions held by women in local governance.
In her address, Mayor Mabag reiterated her administration’s dedication to initiatives that support the well-being and safety of women and children, particularly those in vulnerable communities.
She emphasized that the local government initiatives in Pinabacdao are focused on bolstering assistance for abuse victims, expanding economic opportunities for single mothers, and improving child protection programs.
Mabag stated, `Empowering women involves more than just representation; it also entails establishing programs and structures to safeguard and uplift them. ` The mayor also acknowledged the commitment and sacrifices of women serving in the military and other uniformed services, highlighting their active involvement in combat operations, civil-military engagements, and community development projects within the battalion’s jurisdiction.
She noted that the increasing presence of women in the armed forces reflects a broader movement towards gender equality in traditionally male-dominated institutions.
Mabag remarked, “Women in uniform demonstrate that leadership, bravery, and service transcend gender boundaries.”
Lt. Col. Ricky James L. Rosalejos, the commanding officer of the 63rd Infantry Battalion, underscored the importance of recognizing the capabilities and contributions of women in the armed forces during the International Women’s Month celebration.
Rosalejos emphasized, “Let us unite in honoring the strength, leadership, and commitment of all the women in our ranks and beyond as we mark International Women’s Month.” He highlighted the significant roles women play in administrative tasks, operational missions, and community engagement programs within the military.
“Women showcase that potential is not limited by gender but by determination and competence,” Rosalejos added.
The event also aimed to strengthen the bond between the military and local government officials.
Mayor Mabag participated in a friendly shooting activity with female soldiers and later engaged in a traditional boodle fight, a custom of sharing a meal on banana leaves to signify unity and teamwork.
The Women’s Month kick-off at the 63IB underscored the joint commitment of the Philippine Army and the local government of Pinabacdao to advance gender equality, safeguard the rights of women and children, and support initiatives that promote peace and development in Samar communities.
Organizers revealed that the ceremony marked the beginning of a series of activities planned for the month-long celebration, which seeks to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of women in fostering resilient communities and sustaining peace in the region.
