TACLOBAN CITY — Mayor Alfred S. Romualdez unveiled a set of measures aimed at addressing the escalating fuel prices, bolstering essential services, and advancing key development projects, including the proposed transfer of the city’s public market.
The mayor emphasized that the city government is closely monitoring the global surge in fuel prices, cautioning that this could lead to an increase in the prices of essential goods. He warned against hoarding and price manipulation by certain businesses.
“Binabantayan natin yung hoarding… akala ninyo panic buying, pero may mga nagtatago ng supply para ibenta kapag mataas na ang presyo. Bawal ‘yan,” he stated.
Romualdez mentioned that the city is working in coordination with the Philippine National Police to monitor establishments and prevent illicit activities. He urged the public and media to report any suspected violations to authorities, including the Department of Energy.
He stressed the importance of stringent monitoring to safeguard consumers and ensure price stability amidst ongoing economic challenges.
The mayor also addressed previous issues with garbage collection, attributing the problem to a contractor’s inadequate provision of trucks.
“We had a problem before… kulang ang trucks, kaya hindi naging maayos ang collection,” he explained.
He assured residents that services have improved with the addition of more contractors. However, he cautioned that strict adherence to garbage collection schedules will be enforced, with violators facing fines of approximately P500. The city also plans to install additional CCTV cameras to monitor proper waste disposal.
To alleviate traffic congestion, Romualdez mentioned that certain roads may revert to two-way traffic after Holy Week, once appropriate signage is in place. He emphasized the importance of keeping sidewalks clear for pedestrians, especially as higher fuel prices may encourage more people to walk.
“Priority ay yung tao naglalakad, hindi ang sasakyan,” he emphasized, adding that illegally parked vehicles obstructing sidewalks will be towed.
Despite reports of businesses relocating from the city, the mayor affirmed that Tacloban City remains economically vibrant, with approximately 900 newly registered businesses.
He encouraged business owners to adopt more customer-friendly practices, such as prioritizing customer parking.
A key aspect of the mayor’s plan is the relocation of the city’s public market to the Anibong area to alleviate congestion in the downtown area.
He noted that the current market is outdated and insufficient for the city’s expanding population.
“That market was designed when Tacloban was still a municipality… ngayon city na tayo, hindi na sapat,” he remarked.
Instead of renovating the existing facility, the city intends to construct a new, larger market spanning seven to eight hectares. The proposed site will feature modern amenities, including multi-level parking, solar power, enhanced drainage systems, cold storage facilities, and a dedicated pier for vendors.
Romualdez stated that the relocation will help decongest the city center and enhance traffic flow. The current market site may be repurposed as a passenger terminal and public park, while also supporting the Philippine Ports Authority expansion.
The mayor also expressed concerns about water services, noting that rates have risen despite inadequate supply.
He disclosed that he met with PrimeWater Infrastructure Corp. officials, including owner Lucio Tan, who pledged to repair pipelines.
He cautioned residents against illegal water connections, warning of legal consequences for offenders.
In response to escalating costs, the city government will implement cost-saving measures, including reducing expenditures for major events like the city fiesta. The savings will be redirected to aid vulnerable sectors, particularly fishermen impacted by soaring fuel prices.
Romualdez also mandated stricter controls on government spending, requiring proper documentation for official vehicle usage and limiting unnecessary travel.
He assured the public that these initiatives are part of a comprehensive strategy to keep the city well-organized, responsive, and prepared for future growth despite economic adversities. — Rodalyn Silva | NwSSU Intern
