TACLOBAN CITY — Tacloban City Health Office (CHO) is promoting breast cancer prevention and early detection as part of its Women’s Month campaign.
Data from the show that breast cancer remains a leading cause of death among women globally.
The City Health Office held a press briefing on March 18 to raise awareness about the risks and preventive measures for the disease.
Dr. Lyka Tabao, the CHO’s medical officer and focal officer for the Breast Cancer Awareness Program, highlighted the significance of regular screening for early detection.
She explained that breast cancer risk factors can be modifiable or non-modifiable.
Modifiable factors, such as lifestyle choices, can be managed to reduce the risk of developing the disease, while non-modifiable factors, like family history, cannot be changed.
Dr. Tabao encourages women, especially those aged 40 and above, to perform self-examinations and undergo mammograms regularly.
By promoting routine check-ups and self-screening, the city health office aims to emphasize the preventability and treatability of breast cancer when detected early. — Nicole Cabacang, NWSSU Devcom
