TACLOBAN CITY — The Traffic Operation Management Enforcement and Control Office (TOMECO) has introduced a new traffic scheme for the downtown area of the city with the goal of reducing congestion and enhancing travel efficiency for commuters.
This initiative, unveiled during a press conference on March 19, is also aimed at addressing the impact of increasing global and local fuel prices on public transportation, particularly public utility vehicles (PUVs) operating within the city.
Garry A. Soriano, TOMECO’s chief engineer, presented the plan during the briefing, which was attended by local transport groups, motorcycle-for-hire (MCH) operators, and PUV representatives.
Soriano highlighted that one of the main components of the new scheme is the establishment of temporary terminals proposed by transport groups. These terminals are strategically located near high-traffic areas such as malls and offices to cater to the peak demand for passengers.
TOMECO assured the public that the scheme is designed to benefit both drivers and commuters. The office will provide guidance to drivers on how to adapt to the new system, including the proper utilization of temporary terminals and navigation of revised traffic routes.
Soriano emphasized that TOMECO’s role extends beyond enforcement, noting that the office is also focused on educating and assisting drivers in meeting their operational requirements within the city.
The traffic plan also includes measures to assist motorcycle-for-hire operators in managing fuel consumption amidst escalating diesel and gasoline prices, aiming to alleviate financial burdens on drivers while enhancing service efficiency.
Furthermore, certain streets in the downtown area will transition from one-way to two-way traffic, including Burgos, Gomez, and Zamora streets.
Soriano urged all stakeholders to collaborate in implementing the new system, emphasizing that it reflects TOMECO’s dedication to enhancing urban mobility and supporting the local transport industry.
The office encouraged residents and drivers to provide feedback and raise any concerns regarding the new scheme, assuring the public that adjustments will be made as necessary to ensure a seamless implementation and enhance commuter convenience.
