GANDARA, Samar — As Semana Santa approaches, the local government of Gandara has launched a comprehensive operation involving multiple agencies to ensure the safety of the thousands of devotees expected to gather for this significant religious event.
Mayor Warren Aguilar is spearheading the initiative, collaborating with the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) to implement a coordinated deployment plan aimed at managing crowds and responding to emergencies effectively.
Aguilar stated in an interview on March 26, “Semana Santa is a time of spiritual reflection and devotion for our community. Our top priority is to guarantee the safety and comfort of all residents and visitors participating in the festivities.”
To accommodate the influx of worshippers at churches, authorities are implementing crowd management measures and providing support in key areas. Tents and chairs will be placed near churches for attendees during extended services, and water stations will be set up along procession routes and gathering points to prevent heat-related illnesses.
Emergency preparedness is a crucial aspect of the operation. Medical teams from the Rural Health Office will be strategically stationed to offer immediate assistance, ranging from first aid to handling more severe health issues. Fire and police personnel will be present in high-traffic areas to maintain order and ensure a swift response to emergencies.
Local officials are conducting coordination meetings to finalize assignments for law enforcement and emergency responders, ensuring seamless communication among agencies throughout Holy Week.
The municipal government is collaborating closely with the local Pastoral Council to align safety measures with religious activities, fostering a unified approach between civic authorities and church leaders.
Aguilar emphasized that the proactive governance in Gandara aims to ensure the safety of the community during large-scale events that attract significant public participation.
With a structured safety plan and inter-agency cooperation in place, officials are confident that this year’s Semana Santa observance in Gandara, a third-class municipality in Samar known for its strong Catholic traditions, will be both orderly and meaningful.
