TACLOBAN CITY — Following a magnitude 6.1 earthquake that hit Eastern Samar on Monday, May 4th, in the afternoon, work in all government offices and classes in the province has been suspended.
The earthquake occurred at around 2:09 p.m. with a depth of 10 kilometers, according to PHIVOLCS. The epicenter was located about 9 kilometers northwest of San Julian municipality.
Eastern Samar Governor Ralph Vincent Evardone stated that the suspension is to prioritize public safety due to possible aftershocks.
Various intensities of ground shaking were recorded in different areas.
The provincial government advised residents to stay alert and cautious, especially around potentially damaged structures.
There were reports of some damaged houses, but no casualties so far. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely for any developments.
Meanwhile, in Tacloban City, residents remained calm but shaken after a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck San Julian, Eastern Samar, yesterday.
The sudden tremor caused people to quickly evacuate buildings and seek safety outside.
Despite the initial panic, there were no reports of major injuries or damage. Emergency response teams were deployed to assess infrastructure, and residents shared their experiences online.
City officials advised vigilance for aftershocks and reminded the public to review earthquake preparedness measures. While some schools briefly suspended classes, normal activities have now resumed.
Tacloban residents demonstrated a mix of caution and resilience in the face of the earthquake.
