TACLOBAN CITY — As political tensions persist in the country, the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) Leyte Chapter is urging the public to stay alert against misinformation and political propaganda. They caution that fake news and increasing polarization could erode trust in democratic institutions.

According to IBP Leyte president Atty. Aldrin Quebec, the current political environment surrounding the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte has revealed not only government divisions but also the escalating threat of disinformation during times of national uncertainty.

Quebec emphasized that the ongoing political conflict is not just about politics but also about the battle for truth and public comprehension. He warned that the spread of misinformation can lead to confusion among the populace, weakening the foundations of democracy.

“What we are seeing now is not just a political conflict,” Quebec said. “It is also a battle for truth and public understanding. When misinformation spreads, people become confused about what is really happening, and that weakens democracy.”

The Senate recently convened as an impeachment court to address the allegations against Duterte, including misuse of funds, unexplained wealth, and threats against government officials. Duterte has refuted the accusations, labeling the proceedings as politically driven.

Tensions heightened further following a confrontation involving Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, a Duterte ally wanted by the International Criminal Court. Reports of a standoff and gunfire exchange between NBI agents and Senate security personnel added to the political turmoil.

Quebec stressed the importance of upholding constitutional order amid heightened emotions, emphasizing that political disputes should be resolved within the framework of the law.

“People are witnessing unprecedented events, and naturally emotions are strong,” he said. “But we must remember that the Constitution exists precisely for moments like this. Political disagreements must still be resolved within the rule of law.”

He underscored that impeachment, while a political process, serves as a mechanism for accountability and should not be seen as an assault on democracy.

Amid the proliferation of fake news and divisive narratives, Quebec urged the public to be critical consumers of information and refrain from spreading unverified claims, particularly during politically charged moments.

“Impeachment is part of the checks and balances of government,” he explained. “It is not meant to destroy institutions but to strengthen accountability. In a functioning democracy, no public official is above scrutiny.”

The IBP Leyte Chapter views the legal community as a stabilizing influence during these uncertain times, with lawyers playing a crucial role in ensuring public understanding of constitutional processes free from bias.

Despite the political upheaval, Quebec remains optimistic that democratic safeguards are functioning, emphasizing the importance of resolving conflicts peacefully and constitutionally.

As the nation follows the impeachment proceedings and Senate drama, the IBP Leyte leadership calls on Filipinos to place their trust in the Constitution rather than succumbing to rumors, fear, or political manipulation.

Quebec concluded by emphasizing the vital role of an informed and vigilant citizenry in upholding democracy and the rule of law.
