TACLOBAN CITY – More residents of Limasawa Island are now earning from tourism as the number of visitors coming to the island continues to increase.
Compared to previous years, more tourists are now visiting the island’s popular destinations, bringing additional income to local businesses and workers.
Residents said small stores, food stalls, coffee shops, restaurants, and souvenir shops have started increasing in different parts of the island to serve tourists.
Tricycle and motorcycle drivers are also earning more because visitors need transportation while going around Limasawa.
Some business owners from outside Southern Leyte have also started opening businesses on the island.
One of them is Michelle Nacho from Cebu, who recently started selling souvenir shirts in Limasawa.
Nacho said sales were slow during their first weeks on the island, but more customers started buying from them as tourist arrivals increased.
Businesses operating on the island are also paying permits and other fees to the local government.
Local residents said tourism is helping many families earn additional income.
Jane, a resident of Limasawa, said more people are now buying from their store, especially during weekends and holidays when tourist arrivals are higher.
She also thanked their local government for continuing to support residents and small business owners.
Aside from store owners, boat operators, drivers, and vendors are also benefiting from the growing tourism industry on the island.
Residents are hopeful that tourism will continue to create more livelihood opportunities while helping promote the beauty of Limasawa Island to more visitors.
