PALO, Leyte – Drivers and operators in Eastern Visayas continue to face rising fuel prices and transportation challenges, but the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Region 8 said it is working to provide assistance while pushing for transport modernization.
During an interview with Vanguard News on May 26, 2026, LTFRB Region 8 spokesperson Veronica Reposar said their office continues to listen to the concerns of drivers and operators in the region.
Reposar said qualified drivers and operators are receiving fuel subsidies from the agency to help lessen their daily expenses on the road. Unlike the assistance provided by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), she explained that LTFRB assistance is distributed through GCash, while those without GCash accounts receive checks.
She also discussed the government’s transport modernization program, which encourages individual operators to join cooperatives or associations. According to Reposar, this setup can help drivers receive fixed salaries and benefits such as Social Security System (SSS) coverage, similar to employees of large transportation companies.
Reposar said the modernization program is not only meant to improve public transportation for commuters but also to provide drivers and operators with more stable jobs in the future.
The LTFRB also continues to monitor public utility vehicles in different areas to prevent overloading and ensure that transportation rules are being followed.
Reposar added that their office coordinates with local government units to help address traffic concerns and transportation problems in different localities.
She also encouraged drivers and operators to report complaints and violations directly to the LTFRB office so authorities can immediately take appropriate action.
Despite the challenges faced by the transportation sector, LTFRB Region 8 said it will continue working with drivers, operators, and local officials to improve public transportation services in the region.
