Tacloban City — Communities in the mountainous areas of Leyte are expected to have better access to markets, basic services and livelihood opportunities as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) continues work on the Albuera-Burauen Road.

The DPWH Leyte 4th District Engineering Office is constructing a 148.77-meter section of the road in Barangay San Pedro, Albuera, under the 2026 General Appropriations Act.

The project, worth P69.729 million, covers road construction, lined canal drainage and stone masonry works. Construction started in June 2026, with completion targeted for March 2027.

The road is being developed in phases, with some sections already completed while other portions remain under construction or await funding.

To extend the road further, the district engineering office has proposed another 121.23 meters of road concreting in Albuera under its 2027 program. The proposed work, however, will depend on the availability of funds and implementation.

Once completed, the road will provide a shorter alternative route linking Albuera, Burauen and Ormoc City through the mountainous area where the three localities meet.

For residents living along the route, improved road access could mean easier travel to markets and essential services, as well as better opportunities to transport farm produce and other goods.

The project is also expected to support local economic activities by making the movement of people and commodities more convenient.

The DPWH said the road development forms part of the Marcos administration’s infrastructure program aimed at improving connectivity, particularly in communities where mountainous terrain and distance make travel difficult.

The agency is implementing the project under the leadership of DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon.
