TACLOBAN CITY — Athletes from Tacloban City excelled in the Eastern Visayas Regional Athletic Association (EVRAA) Meet 2026, earning a total of 140 medals and securing the overall 2nd runner-up position in the regional competition.
Competing as part of the Tacloban Phoenix delegation, the city’s athletes also achieved notable results in various divisions of the tournament. Tacloban placed 1st runner-up in the Elementary Division, 2nd runner-up in the Secondary Division, and 3rd runner-up in the Paragames category.
A standout aspect of Tacloban’s performance was a significant increase in their gold medal count. The delegation improved from 23 gold medals in 2025 to 48 gold medals this year, showcasing enhanced preparation and training among the athletes.
Officials from the Department of Education Division attributed this success to teamwork, discipline, determination, and faith, emphasizing the importance of support from schools, coaches, families, and the broader community in nurturing young athletes.
The Tacloban delegation expressed appreciation to Barangay Plaridel, Baybay City officials for hosting them during their 10-day stay for the regional sports meet.
The EVRAA Meet was organized by the City Government of Baybay under the leadership of Jose Carlos Cari and Vice Mayor Erning Butawan, in collaboration with the Schools Division Office led by Schools Division Superintendent Manuel P. Albano and Assistant Schools Division Superintendent Josemilo Ruiz.
Regional education officials, including Ronelo Al Firmo, the regional director of the Department of Education in Eastern Visayas, and Assistant Regional Director Marilyn Siao, commended the successful execution of the sports meet.
Following their impressive performance, Tacloban athletes are gearing up for the Palarong Pambansa 2026, scheduled to take place in the Caraga Region in May, where they will represent Eastern Visayas in the national competition. — Rialin Lauderes, NwSSU Intern
