TACLOBAN CITY — Law enforcement agencies, in collaboration with the Bureau of Internal Revenue, conducted a successful entrapment operation on Wednesday night, April 15, 2026, in Barangay 74 Nula-tula, resulting in the seizure of suspected counterfeit “Magik Sarap” seasoning and untaxed cigarettes valued at over P800,000.
The operation targeted the illegal distribution of counterfeit consumer goods and smuggled tobacco products in Eastern Visayas and was led by the City Intelligence Unit in coordination with other agencies.
An undercover operative posed as a buyer and purchased five boxes of the suspected counterfeit seasoning for P14,400, leading to the arrest phase and the discovery of 211 boxes of the fake product. Nestlé Security Manager Earl Perez estimated the total value of the counterfeit goods at approximately P844,000.
Authorities also confiscated 44 boxes of untaxed cigarettes, including brands like Cannon Menthol and Jackpot, which lacked the necessary tax stamps and permits.
A driver, identified as alias `Ando, was arrested at the scene, suspected of involvement in transporting and distributing the illegal goods. His alleged employer is currently being pursued by authorities.
Five Chinese nationals associated with the rented warehouse were questioned and later released after verification of their valid documentation and lack of direct involvement in the illegal activity.
The arrested suspect is in custody at the Tacloban City Police Station, and charges are being prepared against him. Authorities emphasized the importance of cooperation and information sharing to combat the spread of counterfeit and illegal products, stressing the potential health risks posed by such items.
Atty. Neil U. Cordero, Chief Revenue Officer IV of the Regional Investigation Division, highlighted the ongoing enforcement efforts against counterfeit and smuggled goods, emphasizing the public safety implications of these illicit activities.
Authorities encouraged the public to report any suspicious goods or activities to help prevent the circulation of counterfeit and illegal products.
