Las Navas, Northern Samar — Soldiers recovered an M1 Carbine rifle and two magazines after a brief gunfight with suspected members of the Communist Terrorist Group (CTG) in Barangay Poponton, Las Navas, on Sunday morning, October 4, 2026.

The 20th Infantry Battalion responded to information from residents about alleged extortion and intimidation by armed men in the area.

The troops encountered the armed group, leading to a firefight that lasted about five minutes before the suspects withdrew. No casualties were reported among government forces.

After the encounter, soldiers recovered an M1 Carbine rifle and two magazines believed to have been left behind by the fleeing group.

Brig. Gen. Carmelito Pangatungan, commander of the 803rd Infantry Brigade, condemned the reported extortion and intimidation, saying these activities harm the very communities the armed group claims to represent.

He also thanked residents who reported the alleged threats, noting that their cooperation helped authorities respond to the situation.

The 8th Infantry Division (8ID) also recognized the residents’ assistance and urged the public to report threats and suspicious activities to authorities.

The military called on remaining CTG members to abandon armed struggle and return to civilian life. Those who choose to surrender may seek assistance through government programs, including the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP), the Local Social Integration Program (LSIP), and the government’s amnesty program.

These programs provide support for former rebels as they return to their families and communities.
