TACLOBAN CITY — Christmas in Tacloban City felt different this year. Former CPP-NPA members, now known as “Friends Rescued,” came together, not as fighters, but as individuals looking toward a peaceful future.
On December 19, the Leyte Park Hotel was filled with a new sense of energy. The Joint Task Force (JTF) Tacloban and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) hosted a holiday gathering that spoke volumes about starting anew.
Colonel Ronald Illana, leading JTF Tacloban, initiated the “Handong Pamasko” event. The goal was simple: to make these individuals feel welcomed, give them a genuine chance at happiness, and remind them of their place in society.
The DSWD Field Office VIII, represented by Arlene Lagula, collaborated with JTF Tacloban for this event. It wasn’t just one agency providing assistance; it was a true partnership, one that ensures successful reintegration.
Forty-two “Friends Rescued” attended with their families. While there was food and festivities, the support extended beyond that. Each family received food packs and supplies from the JTG, and the DSWD distributed PHP 2,000 in cash to each individual through AICS program. This tangible support was provided when it was needed most.
Alma Gabin, who heads the Eastern Visayas Peace Builders and Development Federation INC, emphasized the significance of these gestures. She described the assistance as a “big deal,” enabling families to genuinely enjoy Christmas and approach 2026 with real hope, not just wishful thinking.
This transformation goes beyond mere labels. These individuals have transitioned from armed rebels to peace builders, marking a significant change for Tacloban.
Instead of conflict, they are now sharing meals and stories together. It’s truly a new chapter for the city, demonstrating that peace is not only achievable but already in progress.
