Catbalogan City — The Walang Gutom Kitchen in this city will start its regular operations in the first week of October, serving 400 meals a day to people who need food assistance.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Eastern Visayas will prepare 200 meals for breakfast and another 200 for lunch each day.
DSWD Eastern Visayas Regional Director Grace Subong said the kitchen will officially open during the first week of October.
Breakfast will be served starting at 6 a.m., while lunch will be served at 11 a.m. Meals will be available until supplies run out.
The kitchen will operate daily, including Saturdays and Sundays.
Among those expected to benefit are low-income families, people living on the margins, tricycle drivers, students and others who need help with food.
Subong said Catbalogan was chosen as the first site for the program in the region after the DSWD recorded a high level of involuntary hunger in the city.
The DSWD will coordinate with the Catbalogan City government in running the kitchen and serving beneficiaries.
Meals will also follow the Pinggang Pinoy guide, which promotes balanced meals made up of Go, Grow and Glow foods.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. inspected the kitchen on Sept. 25 with DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian, Samar Gov. Sharee Ann Tan, Catbalogan City Mayor Dexter Uy and other local officials.
Uy welcomed the program, saying it would provide additional assistance to residents and help address their social service needs.
The Walang Gutom Kitchen is part of the DSWD’s Pag-Abot Program, which provides food assistance to families and individuals experiencing hunger.
