Tanauan, Leyte — The local government of Tanauan has granted a Php 10, 000 donation to each of the 108 families whose houses were completely destroyed by Typhoon Tino in November 2025. The turnover took place on January 22, 2026, and was facilitated by the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO).

MSWDO Officer Jasmine Borja explained that the beneficiaries were identified and verified by the barangay captains from all 54 barangays in the town to ensure that the assistance was given to families with totally damaged houses. This local initiative is one of the measures to help rural residents who suffered the most during the storm.

Mayor Gina Merilo, who was at the forefront of the relief operation, emphasized that the grant is only intended to help the victims recover from the disaster and is not a political or financial move. The MSWDO also worked hand in hand with the barangay officials to make the payout a smooth and transparent exercise.

The cash grant from Tanauan aligns with the services provided by the national government through the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Emergency Cash Transfer (ECT) program, which offers non- conditional cash assistance to families of victims whose houses were damaged due to natural calamities. The ECT program is operating in several regions most affected by Typhoon Tino, and the distributions are helping families access basic needs such as food, medicines and shelter repairs.

The national response is in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s declaration of a state of national calamity in the affected regions after the typhoon. This declaration allowed the government to quickly allocate hundreds of millions of pesos for relief and rehabilitation efforts in the affected areas.

Local officials indicated that the cash aid, although limited, is still a significant help in the initial recovery of families who are starting to rebuild their homes and lives.
