SAMAR — Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon visited the Maharlika Highway in Samar on March 9 to check on the severe damage and ongoing repair efforts.

He met with local residents, including barangay officials, vendors, and motorists who are facing challenges due to the deteriorating road conditions.

The Maharlika Highway is an important transportation route that connects Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

The DPWH is working on repairs in damaged sections of the highway to reopen targeted areas next week. The agency aims to complete these repairs within 14 days to ensure safer travel, especially as the peak travel season approaches.

Dizon noted that initial temporary measures have already improved travel times between Samar and neighboring provinces. However, he emphasized the need for a full rehabilitation of the highway to address long-term issues.

A comprehensive rehabilitation project for the Maharlika Highway in Samar is planned for later this year with an estimated cost of around P16 billion.

The DPWH official highlighted the importance of sustained funding from the national government to complete these long-term repair and widening projects.

Local residents, including Samar Governor Sharee Ann Tan, appreciate the government’s focus on rehabilitating the highway. They hope that the ongoing efforts will result in improved road conditions and enhanced travel experiences for motorists and residents in the area.

The challenges faced by motorists and residents along the Maharlika Highway, such as potholes and mud-prone sections, have been a longstanding issue.

The DPWH is committed to completing short-term repairs before Holy Week and preparing for the major rehabilitation project that is set to begin later this year. — Rodalyn Silva, NWSSU, DEVCom, Intern
