The recent Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) peace rally has been followed by a wave of controversy, not just for its political undertones, but for the alleged remarks made by Senator Imee Marcos. Reports claim Senator Marcos stated that President PBBM, along with First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, are drug addicts. The Palace has vehemently denied these allegations, with Usec. Claire Castro dismissing them as baseless “kwentong kutsero” (tall tales).
It is important to recall that President PBBM tested negative for drug use in a test conducted at St. Luke’s Hospital last year (2024), a result that was confirmed by experts during a Senate inquiry.
However, the primary concern here is not whether the allegations are true or false, but rather the context in which they were allegedly made and the implications for Filipino family values. Senator Imee’s alleged statements are seen by many as a profound breach of familial loyalty, a deeply ingrained principle in Filipino culture.
Regardless of the veracity of these claims, the timing and venue were highly inappropriate. The statement was reportedly made at a religious gathering, a setting that should be dedicated to spiritual reflection and unity, not political attacks. Furthermore, the call for the President’s resignation further politicized the event.
Filipinos are known for being a family-centered nation, a society that values love, respect, and the protection of its members. The saying “blood is thicker than water” often dictates behavior, emphasizing the importance of family bonds and loyalty. Senator Imee’s alleged actions seem to contradict these cherished values. While her intent may have been rooted in a desire for good governance, the timing, manner, and alleged content of her statement have been widely criticized as a betrayal of family and a violation of established decorum.
This incident raises serious questions about the erosion of traditional Filipino values in the face of political ambition. It underscores the need for responsible discourse, even amidst deep political divisions, and a commitment to upholding the principles of respect, loyalty, and familial harmony.
It is crucial that Filipino political leaders uphold the cherished cultural values passed down by our ancestors. Our actions must reflect a commitment to protecting our families and preserving the values that define us as a nation.
