ORMOC CITY — Two men were killed in a road crash involving a motorcycle and a multicab in Barangay Libertad, Ormoc City, on the evening of December 31, police reported.

The accident occurred around 6:55 p.m. and involved a motorcycle with two riders and a multicab traveling in the opposite direction. The motorcycle riders were identified by the police as alias Jun, 31, and his passenger, alias John, both residents of Barangay Libertad.

According to the investigation conducted by the Ormoc City Police Office, the motorcycle was traveling from the city proper towards Barangay Libertad when it collided head-on with the multicab in the middle of the road. Witnesses informed the police that the motorcycle seemed to be swerving before the collision, and authorities are investigating reports that the riders may have been under the influence of alcohol.

The multicab was driven by alias Toni, 37, a salesman and resident of Ormoc City. Police Captain Jason Navarrete Mateo, the officer-in-charge of the Traffic Enforcement Unit, mentioned that the multicab driver tried to avoid the approaching motorcycle, but the motorcycle suddenly returned to its lane, resulting in a head-on collision.

The impact caused severe damage to the motorcycle. Both riders were rushed to the hospital but were pronounced dead upon arrival. A passenger of the multicab sustained injuries and is currently recuperating in the hospital. The multicab driver also sustained injuries and is now in police custody.

Police stated that a case of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide and property damage is being prepared against the multicab driver. The remains of the two motorcycle riders have been released to their families.

The incident occurred as residents were preparing to welcome the New Year, turning what should have been a night of celebration into one of mourning for the families affected.
