San Jorge, Samar — Government forces thwarted an extortion attempt and confiscated a cache of weapons from remnants of a Communist Terrorist Group (CTG) in Barangay Cagtoto-og, highlighting the growing collaboration between civilians and authorities in Eastern Visayas.

The incident took place on February 2, 2026, following reports from locals about armed individuals trying to extort farmers. Acting on this information, the 3rd Infantry Battalion of the 8th Infantry “Stormtroopers” Division (8ID) conducted a combat patrol to protect the community.

Tensions escalated when CTG elements reportedly opened fire on a civilian suspected of cooperating with the military. Soldiers promptly responded, engaging the rebels in a brief but intense firefight. Although the rebels managed to flee into nearby terrain, they left behind various weapons and equipment, including a .45-caliber pistol, explosive devices, and combat gear.

After the encounter, the 8ID launched additional pursuit and security operations to prevent further rebel threats and ensure the safety of local residents.

Army Captain Christopher Tataro, the spokesperson of 8th Infantry Division, reiterated the armed force’s adherence to International Humanitarian Law and pledged to thwart insurgent activities in the region.

Captain Tataro urged remaining NPA members to surrender and avail themselves of government reintegration programs, such as the Amnesty Program and the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP), offering former rebels a chance to reintegrate into civilian life.

At present , the 8ID continues to closely monitor the area to safeguard the farming community and maintain the security gains achieved.
