BASEY, Samar — The success of young athletes from this town in a recent Eastern Visayas Regional Athletic Association (EVRAA) Meet 2026 regional sports competition has been credited to the strong support provided by the local government.
Mayor Luz Ponferrada and the Municipality of Basey have actively promoted sports development programs to nurture young talents and encourage youth participation in athletics.
A total of 11 Basey athletes won medals in various sporting events in Baybay City, Leyte, on March 1–6, 2026, highlighting the impact of the town’s investment in sports training and youth development programs.
Ponferrada praised the athletes for their commitment and perseverance, underscoring the importance of ongoing support from the local government, schools, and the community.
“These victories demonstrate that the youth of Basey have the potential to excel not only in academics but also in sports. Your hard work and sacrifices have paid off, and the entire town celebrates your success,” Ponferrada told The Vanguard in an interview on March 10.
Leading the medal count were members of Basey’s sepak takraw team, who excelled in their category and won multiple gold medals.
Notable among them was Xiann Michael C. Taburnal, who clinched a gold medal and a silver award in the Best Regular Event category. He was joined by teammates Jude P. Odayat, Geneses T. Odal, and Lynard R. Pacurib, who all earned gold medals in the sport.
In archery, Jamil Vince P. Bisnar added another gold medal for the municipality, while Aaron James T. Viojan displayed his versatility by winning gold, silver, and bronze medals.
Other athletes also contributed to Basey’s medal count. Christian Jane Dela Peña secured a bronze in elementary softball, while Renalyn G. Boñola and Ma. Joecil M. Belen earned bronze medals in athletics events. Uldriex Solomon L. Ancheta captured bronze in table tennis, while Carl G. Cajefe and Jirex Candine Dela Cruz received bronze medals in taekwondo.
Local officials also recognized the crucial role played by coaches, trainers, parents, and schools in preparing the athletes for the competition.
Community leaders stated that the athletes’ accomplishments showcase how continuous investment in sports development can motivate more young Baseynons to pursue their talents and strive for excellence.
To the people of Basey, the athletes’ triumphs signify more than just medals—they embody dedication, discipline, and the enduring spirit of the Baseynon community.
