DARAM, Samar — A construction worker was arrested following an alleged arson incident in Barangay San Roque, Daram, Samar in the early hours of May 8.
The victim was identified as alias “Rhea,” a resident of Barangay San Roque. The suspect was identified as alias “Jerry,” 40 years-old and also a resident of the same village.
According to the report, at around 6:30 a.m., the barangay captain personally reported the fire incident to the Daram Police Station.
Authorities immediately responded and conducted an investigation. It was learned that the suspect was allegedly intoxicated and was seen entering their house carrying a cigarette butt before the fire broke out.
Witnesses said they later saw the suspect’s house already engulfed in flames, which eventually spread to the victim’s adjacent house.
Police conducted a hot pursuit operation that resulted in the arrest of the suspect at around 6:50 a.m. in Purok 5, Brgy. San Roque, Daram, Samar.
According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the initial estimated damage caused by the fire reached P42,000.
The fire reportedly started at around 1:36 a.m. and was declared under control by 1:40 a.m.
Two houses made of light materials were completely destroyed, while another house made of mixed materials sustained partial damage.
No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident.
The suspect is now under police custody and will face appropriate charges.
