CATBALOGAN CITY, Samar — Around 30 to 40 houses were destroyed after a fire swept through a residential area near the seawall at Pier 2 in Barangay 3, Catbalogan City, on Friday afternoon, June 5.
The fire broke out shortly after 1 p.m. and spread quickly from one house to another. Most of the structures were made of light materials, while several were being rented out as boarding houses.
Residents rushed to save whatever belongings they could as thick smoke covered the area. Firefighters and volunteers worked for hours to stop the flames from reaching nearby homes.
By 3:27 p.m., responders had gained control of the fire and prevented it from spreading further.
Authorities have not yet released the number of families affected by the fire. There were also no immediate reports of injuries or deaths.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Officials are also assessing the damage and the assistance needed by families who lost their homes.
