Guiuan, Eastern Samar — When the gavel falls silent at the Sangguniang Panlalawigan session hall, Board Member Pol Gonzales trades his legislative papers for a whistle and a starting‑line flag. For the people of Eastern Samar, he is known first as a dedicated lawmaker who pushes policies for the province’s growth – but to thousands of young students and athletes across its towns, he is something more: a steadfast sports advocate who believes that true discipline and community progress begin on the field, track, and court.

Recently, BM Gonzales stood as guest speaker during the historic 2026 Inter‑Campus Meet of Eastern Samar State University, hosted right here at the ESSU Guiuan Campus. The event carried the theme: “One ESSU, One Spirit: United in Excellence Through Sports” – a vision that mirrors Gonzales’ long‑held advocacy for youth development through sports.

“Malipayon kita nga nagpa‑angbit han aton mensahe hin camaraderie ngan sportsmanship,” he told the crowd of athletes, coaches, faculty, and university officials. He shared his joy in bringing forward the message of camaraderie and sportsmanship to the gathering.

This first‑ever inter‑campus meet brought together ESSU’s seven campuses – home to the Guiuan Herons, Salcedo Panthers, Maydolong Blue Marlins, Borongan Red Dragons, Arteche Starling Bird, Balangiga Badgers, and Can‑avid Eagles – each sending their best young talents to showcase skill, grit, and school pride. For Gonzales, this was never just a competition; it was a living example of what he has been fighting for inside the provincial legislature and out in the communities.

“Sports is more than winning medals,” Gonzales explained in his address. “When our people train hard, follow rules, show up early, and push through tired days – they build self‑discipline. That same discipline shapes them to become responsible, productive members of our towns and villages later on.”

He took the opportunity to thank the ESSU administration, headed by University President Dr. Andres C. Pagatpatan Jr., for leading the launch of this landmark event. He also extended gratitude to the Guiuan Campus administration, faculty, and staff for opening their grounds and preparing for the big gathering. To all seven delegations, he said: “Kamo an kasingkasing hini nga selebrasyon.”

For years, inside the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, BM Gonzales has pushed for measures to allocate better support for provincial sports programs: more training venues, sports equipment for public schools, and regular meets where young Eastern Samareños can compete and grow. But those who work with him say his advocacy goes beyond passing resolutions. He makes it a point to travel to different towns, including Guiuan, to attend student competitions, talk to young athletes, and encourage them to balance their studies with physical activity, reminding them that sports builds not just strong bodies but also strong character and unity across the province.

As the 2026 Inter‑Campus Meet unfolded, cheers echoed across the Guiuan grounds from sprinters racing toward the finish line to teams huddling together after every game. For BM Pol Gonzales, every cheer was a sign that his vision is taking root: a generation of disciplined, united, and productive youth rising across Eastern Samar one race, one match, and one determined step at a time.

“One ESSU, One Spirit and one Eastern Samar, moving forward together through sports and hard work.” BM Pol Gonzales
