Rolly Magallanes DAGAMI, Leyte — The local town police of Dagami have increased security measures before New Year’s Eve to protect the public by enforcing municipal ordinances prohibiting the use of illegal firecrackers and discharging firearms in the municipality.
During an interview with Vanguard on December 29, Dagami Police Station Chief Rexel De Asis stated that the Dagami Police are focusing on preventative actions before the citizens celebrate the New Year. He mentioned that there are strict municipal ordinances prohibiting both the use of illegal firecrackers and firearms in the municipality.
“We are focused on preparing our community for New Year’s celebrations and protecting our citizens,” De Asis stated. “Our priority is ensuring everyone can safely celebrate the New Year with their families and children in the comfort of their own homes.”
To set an example for the Dagami Police Officers and ensure compliance, De Asis mentioned that all firearms issued to Dagami police officers would be sealed during the New Year’s celebrations to prevent accidental or inappropriate firing.
As part of their efforts to educate the public about how illegal firecrackers and gunfire can injure people and damage properties, members of the Dagami Police have been visiting various barangays throughout the area and conducting “bandilyo” or traditional means of making public announcements.
According to Major De Asis, the Dagami PNP has focused on providing information to the community, rather than making arrests, to help prevent any accidents or injuries related to illegal firecrackers and gunfire.
While encouraging community members to refrain from firing guns during the holidays, De Asis also warns that the Dagami Police intends to take appropriate action against anyone caught illegally using firearms. Upon receiving any report that an individual discharged a firearm, the Dagami PNP will use Gun Powder Residue (GPR) testing to determine if significant evidence exists to prosecute that individual.
By providing education to the public, enforcing the law, and instituting safety measures, the Dagami Police will assist the community in maintaining peace and order and creating a safe and injury-free New Year.
