Catbalogan City, Samar — Police have increased patrols in Barangay Mercedes following a shooting and chase early Wednesday morning that involved three minors.
The incident happened at around 2 a.m. on August 26 in Purok 6, where a confrontation reportedly escalated into a chase. Two shots were fired during the incident, according to police.
No one was reported injured.
The incident, however, has caused concern among residents after a video showing part of what happened was shared on social media.
Samar Police Provincial Director PCol. Arwin Tadeo said police understand why residents are worried but urged the public to wait for verified information while investigators look into the incident.
“We understand the concern of the public, especially with the circulating video,” Tadeo said.
He said Catbalogan City remains relatively peaceful despite the incident.
Police have also adjusted the deployment of patrollers in the area to increase their presence and prevent possible retaliation or another confrontation.
The case is being handled with added care because the three persons being investigated are minors.
Police identified the alleged shooter as alias “BJ,” who reportedly fired two shots. His companions were identified as aliases “Nes” and “Melvin.”
Tadeo said the Women and Children Protection Desk is coordinating with the local social welfare and development office and the parents of the minors.
“The safety and protection of minors are serious concerns for the PNP,” he said.
Police are also asking the public to be careful about sharing the video and other information about the incident.
Tadeo said unverified reports could cause unnecessary fear and confusion in the community. He encouraged residents to rely on official police updates for information about the case.
Investigators are also asking residents who have CCTV footage or information about what happened to come forward.
Tadeo said information from the public could help investigators establish what led to the confrontation and shooting.
“Our priority is to maintain order and ensure the safety of our people, especially our children,” he said.
