BASEY, Samar — A motorcycle passenger was killed while four others were injured in a serious road accident involving an oil tanker that crashed into two motorcycles in Barangay Magallanes, Basey, Samar, shortly after midnight on January 6, police said.

Police identified the fatality as alias “Conrad”, a resident of the barangay, who was riding as a passenger on one of the motorcycles involved in the collision.

According to PCpt. Aileen G. Velarde, Chief of Police of the Basey Municipal Police Station (MPS), the accident occurred at around 12:00 a.m. near a bridge in Barangay Magallanes. The oil tanker, driven by “Adan” (alias), a resident of Albuera, Leyte, was traveling from Leyte to Eastern Samar when it reportedly suffered a mechanical malfunction.

Velarde said the tanker driver lost control of the vehicle, veered into the opposite lane, and struck two motorcycles that were traveling in convoy and driven by “Mark” and “Jerson” (aliases), both residents of the same barangay. The tanker then continued forward and crashed into a house along the roadside.

The impact damaged the house and injured one resident inside, identified as alias “Nelson”. Conrad sustained critical injuries, while the two motorcycle drivers suffered various injuries to their bodies.

All the injured were rushed to the hospital, but Conrad was declared dead on arrival, Velarde added. The two motorcycle drivers and the injured resident are currently recovering.

The oil tanker driver is now in police custody and is facing charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, multiple physical injuries, and damage to property. Police are continuing their investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.
