Tacloban City — Police in Tacloban will continue stepped-up patrols and public assistance beyond the Undas observance as the city prepares to mark the 13th anniversary of Super Typhoon Yolanda on November 8.

Tacloban City Police Station 1 is continuing its security operations under Oplan Undas 2026 to keep peace and order during All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day and the activities leading to the Yolanda anniversary.

Police personnel are assigned to public areas, including cemeteries and memorial parks, where families gather to visit the graves of their loved ones.

Tacloban has six major cemeteries and memorial parks: Holy Cross Memorial Garden, Basper Public Cemetery, Superior Memorial Garden, Leyte Memorial Park Cemetery, Chinese Cemetery and El Reposo Cemetery.

The police are also expected to maintain their presence in key areas and assist residents and visitors attending activities for the November 8 commemoration.

Yolanda, internationally known as Haiyan, struck Eastern Visayas on November 8, 2013, bringing powerful winds and storm surges that devastated Tacloban and other coastal communities.

Houses were swept away, roads and public infrastructure were damaged, and thousands of people lost their lives. Tacloban was among the hardest-hit areas, with more than 2,000 reported deaths. Across the country, the typhoon claimed about 6,300 lives, based on official figures.

Two sites in Tacloban remain closely associated with the tragedy: the Yolanda Memorial Monument in Anibong, where a cargo ship was carried inland by the storm surge, and Holy Cross Memorial Park in Barangay Basper, where thousands of victims were buried in a mass grave.

Thirteen years after the disaster, families and survivors continue to remember those who died and those whose lives were changed by the typhoon.

“Our mission is to serve and protect. Let us work together to make Undas 2026 peaceful, safe, and orderly for all,” said Police Major Kent Rivas, chief of Tacloban City Police Station 1.

The police urged the public to follow security reminders and report any suspicious activity or emergency to the nearest police personnel.
