TACLOBAN CITY — The government is intensifying efforts to achieve lasting peace in Eastern Visayas by collaborating with local communities, agencies, and leaders. Through the Whole-of-Nation Approach, the programs aim to address local communist armed conflict while promoting community growth and development.

At a media briefing on February 26 at Hotel Costa Brava, officials from the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity (OPAPRU) provided updates on the Localized Peace Engagement (LPE) and Transformation Program (TP). These initiatives focus on assisting former rebels and their families in transitioning back to normal life, enhancing security, livelihood opportunities, and community relations.

Director Darwin Wally T. Wee of OPAPRU emphasized the importance of accurate news reporting to ensure public understanding and support for peace efforts.

Meanwhile, Director Noly Mapili of OPAPRU CPP-NPA-NDF Peace Process Office, highlighted that the programs allocate funding for project activities and services that aid in community recovery and development.

The government ensures transparency and accountability in the implementation of these programs. OPAPRU closely monitors the utilization of funds to ensure that resources are effectively reaching those in need.

Collaboration among local governments, national agencies, and community organizations is crucial for the successful implementation of these programs on the ground.

Imelda Bonifacio, OPAPRU Area Manager for Eastern Visayas, acknowledged the existing challenges but noted progress in reintegrating former rebels and supporting local communities.

Officials also urged eligible individuals to apply for the government’s amnesty program before the March 13, 2026 deadline, offering them an opportunity to make a fresh start and contribute to peace and development in their communities.

Bonifacio emphasized that peace goes beyond the mere absence of conflict; it involves building resilient communities where everyone can coexist and thrive together. — Rialin Lauderes, DEVCom Intern
