BORONGAN, Eastern Samar — In a Labor Day celebration that highlighted excellence beyond the workplace, the provincial government led by Governor Ralph Vincent “RV” Evardone awarded cash incentives to medal-winning student-athletes and coaches from the recent Eastern Visayas Regional Athletic Association (EVRAA) meet during the Gawad Tagumpay ceremony at the Provincial Capitol Gym.
The recognition program honored athletes from both the Borongan City Schools Division and Eastern Samar Schools Division, who brought pride to the province with their podium finishes in the regional competition.
The Borongan City Division’s Golden Sunrise Warriors – composed of 41 athletes and 15 coaches – placed 11th overall, clinching seven gold, four silver, and eight bronze medals. Each gold medalist received P5,000, silver winners got P4,000, and bronze medalists were awarded P3,000. The delegation also received additional financial support from Borongan City Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan Agda, whose representative joined the ceremony alongside City Councilor Zen Daza.
Meanwhile, the Eastern Samar Schools Division’s Vaillant Hawks achieved a sixth-place overall ranking, with an impressive haul of 20 gold, 11 silver, and 24 bronze medals from 128 athletes and 33 coaches. The provincial government granted higher incentives to this team, with P10,000 for gold, P7,000 for silver, and P5,000 for bronze.
Coaches from both divisions were also recognized for their dedication, receiving separate incentives equivalent to 50 percent of the amount awarded to athletes for each medal their teams won.
Governor Evardone emphasized that the incentive program is part of the provincial government’s commitment to nurturing young talent and promoting sports as a platform for holistic development. “We want to recognize the hard work and achievements of our student-athletes, and encourage them to continue striving for excellence in sports and in their studies,” he stated during the ceremony.
Leading the awarding were Governor Evardone and Vice Governor Maricar Sison-Goteesan, together with Sangguniang Panlalawigan members Board Member Timmy Campomanes, BM Atty. Byron Suyot, and BM Jun Quelitano. Department of Education officials Dr. Katrina Sadac and representatives from both schools divisions were also present to witness the event.
The Labor Day honors underscore Eastern Samar’s investment in its youth, framing athletic achievement as a testament to the same discipline and dedication that drives productive work and community progress.
