TACLOBAN CITY — Years of stringent environmental protection and controlled tourism efforts have led to Kalanggaman Island in Palompon, Leyte, being featured on the “World’s 50 Best Beaches” list for 2026, providing another reason for celebration in Eastern Visayas.

Kalanggaman secured the 25th spot on the global list, alongside Entalula Beach in El Nido, Palawan, as the Philippine destinations featured this year.

Local officials view this recognition as more than just a milestone in tourism. They see it as a reflection of the community and local government’s dedication to maintaining the island’s cleanliness and protection despite the increasing number of visitors.

Palompon Mayor Mary Dominique Oñate emphasized the town’s longstanding commitment to preserving the island’s natural allure, particularly its white sandbars and crystal-clear waters that draw tourists from various parts of the country and beyond.

To prevent overcrowding and minimize environmental impact, the local government restricts daily visitors to 500. Tourism activities are closely monitored, and development on the island is kept to a minimum.

Officials believe that these measures have been instrumental in preserving Kalanggaman’s pristine condition over time.

Karina Rosa Tiopes, the Department of Tourism Regional Director, anticipates that this recognition will not only shine a spotlight on Kalanggaman but also on other destinations in Eastern Visayas.

While the acknowledgment may lead to an increase in tourist arrivals, safeguarding the island’s integrity must remain the top priority.

Accessible only by boat, Kalanggaman has garnered praise from travel experts for its expansive sandbar and well-maintained, unspoiled environment.
