HOMONHON ISLAND, Guiuan, Eastern Samar — The panic of residents in Brgy. Pagbabangnan, Homonhon Island, first turned into careful determination when a mountainside fire threatened their homes and livelihood.
The fire, which was initially spotted on Thursday evening, January 22, spread quickly along the mountainside due to dry conditions and strong winds. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but local residents feared it could reach their homes after a prolonged dry spell.
Emergency responders dispatched water trucks and fire personnel, but controlling the fire was challenging due to the steep terrain and limited road access.
However, residents showed great strength by forming small volunteer groups to create firebreaks and monitor the fire’s movement.
Farmers tended to their crops and wood resources while families collaborated with neighbors on caring for children and the elderly.
Authorities maintained vigilance and closely monitored the situation, urging residents to remain alert while firefighters worked to extinguish the flames.
Despite fear and anxiety, the Homonhon Island community displayed a combination of courage and preparedness. This demonstrates that even in the face of a life-threatening fire, united community efforts can save lives, homes and livelihoods.
