BASEY, Samar — Four individuals, including the driver, lost their lives when a van collided with a stationary trailer truck on February 10 at approximately 6:40 a.m. in Sitio Sugpuron, Barangay Balud, Basey, Samar.
The driver, known as “Ron,” aged 54 and a resident of Barangay Calaasan, Alangalang, Leyte, was among the casualties. The three passengers who perished were identified as “Lucy,” aged 71; `Mel’; and “Nimfa,” aged 57, all hailing from Borongan City.
According to the Basey Municipal Police Station (MPS), the van was en route from Borongan City to Tacloban City when the tragic incident occurred. The investigation and CCTV footage revealed that the van swerved into the opposite lane and collided with a parked trailer truck along the roadside.
Authorities suspect that the van was travelling at a high speed, compounded by slippery road conditions due to rain at the time of the crash. The front of the van sustained severe damage, leading to some passengers being ejected from the vehicle upon impact.
Six other passengers survived the collision and are currently undergoing medical treatment. The injured individuals were transported to a medical facility, but unfortunately, four of them, including the driver, were declared dead.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident. The deceased have been released to their respective families, while law enforcement continues to probe the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
