TANAUAN CITY, Leyte — Women from various sectors in Tanauan municipality came together on Friday, March 13, to commemorate National Women’s Month, drawing inspiration from the leadership legacy of the Babaylans, women known in early Philippine societies as spiritual leaders, healers, and respected guides of their communities.
The event, centered around the theme “Lead Like the Babaylans, Filipinas,” was organized by the Tanauan Women’s Federation Association (TWFA) led by Municipal Federation President Gina Gobenciong.
In ancient Philippine societies, Babaylans were influential women who held significant roles. They served as spiritual mediators, healers, advisors, and leaders who guided their communities in cultural and social matters. Respected for their wisdom and bravery, Babaylans were known for standing up for their people during challenging times.
The chosen theme aimed to remind contemporary women of the strength and leadership qualities historically embodied by Filipino women.
In an interview, Gobenciong highlighted the enduring role of women as leaders and pillars of their communities represented by the Babaylan tradition.
“The Babaylans were respected leaders who guided and protected their communities. Today, we want women to remember that same strength and continue supporting each other while becoming active leaders in our society,” Gobenciong expressed.
She urged women to uplift one another and engaged in programs promoting empowerment and development in their communities.
The event brought together women leaders, community volunteers, and representatives from local government offices to participate in activities aimed at strengthening women’s advocacy in Tanauan.
Acting Mayor Lawrence R. Capunan also graced the event and recognized the vital role women play in driving social initiatives and community development in the municipality.
The program included an intermission performance by members of the Tanauan Women’s Federation Association, followed by inspirational messages from Jill L. Retaga, manager of the Public Employment Service Office (PESO) for District 2, and Jasmine U. Borja, the municipality’s Municipal Social Welfare and Development Officer.
Both speakers emphasized the importance of unity among women in advancing advocacy programs and building stronger and more sustainable communities.
Certificates of appreciation were presented to individuals who supported the federation’s activities. TWFA adviser Marina Tolibas and federation vice president Geraldine De Veyra delivered brief messages encouraging women to remain united and active in community leadership.
An essential advocacy component of the program included an orientation on Republic Act 9262, or the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act, conducted by a representative of the Philippine National Police (PNP) to raise awareness about legal protections available to women and children against abuse and violence.
Despite the inclement weather, participants remained determined in their participation, showcasing the resilience and unity of women in Tanauan.
Geraldine Acantilado De Veyra, vice president of the Municipal Women’s Association Federation, highlighted the local government’s efforts to empower women through livelihood opportunities facilitated by the PESO office, providing support for women seeking to enhance their economic conditions.
The Women’s Month celebration served as a reminder that the spirit of the Babaylan, symbolizing wisdom, courage, and leadership, endures among Filipino women today.
For many attendees, the gathering was not only a celebration but also a call to continue the legacy of strong women leaders who guide their communities toward progress.
Come rain or shine, the women of Tanauan stood together, reviving the spirit of the Babaylans while advancing empowerment, advocacy, and leadership in their community.
