LAWAAN, Eastern Samar — Four families in the municipality of Lawaan received critical support on March 18, 2026, as Governor Ralph Vincent “RV” Evardone personally handed over P25,000 in financial assistance to each household affected by a devastating fire earlier this year.
The fire, which broke out on the evening of January 20, 2026, left three families from Barangay 8 and one from Barangay 10 with completely destroyed homes and unusable belongings. Speaking during the aid distribution, Governor Evardone emphasized that the provincial government’s response is rooted in its commitment to standing with every Estehanon in times of crisis.
“Each family receives P25,000 to help them rebuild what was lost – whether it’s purchasing construction materials, replacing essential belongings, or covering immediate needs while they get back on their feet,” Governor Evardone explained. “We cannot bring back what was destroyed, but we can ensure our people have the resources to start anew.”
Annaliza Peñaz, a beneficiary from Barangay 8, shared her gratitude for the timely support. “Igpapalit namon ini hin kahoy ngan iban pang materyales para makapagtigdong utro hin balay. Importante nga mayroon hin maayong dibisyon han mga kwarto para ha amon mga anak,” she said, noting that the funds will go toward building a safer home for her children.
Investigations confirm the fire was caused by an electrical issue, and while no one was injured, thanks to a child who spotted the flames and alerted the household, all four families lost nearly everything they owned. For the past months, they have relied on temporary shelters or the kindness of relatives.
Joining Governor Evardone in the distribution were Lawaan Mayor Athene Mendros, Vice Mayor Ravi Parker Inciso, and members of the Sangguniang Bayan. The provincial government also committed to providing additional support, including building materials and livelihood assistance, to help the families establish stable lives once more.
“Our responsibility does not end with financial aid. We will continue to work with these families until they have rebuilt not just their homes, but their sense of security and hope for the future,” Governor Evardone stated.
The beneficiaries expressed heartfelt appreciation for the province’s support. “Hul-os kami nga nagpapasalamat kay Gov. Evardone han iya madagmit nga pagtabang. Waray gud kami mahimo pagkabuhi kon diri kami hin tabangan,” they shared collectively.
