CAN-AVID, Eastern Samar — The Local Government of Can-avid has distributed 10-kilo sacks of rice to 4,959 families on July 20, as part of its ongoing Rice Distribution Program, with Mayor Hon. Alicia Teves is leading efforts to ensure aid reaches every family in the municipality.

A total of 7,323 sacks have been allocated for the initiative—enough to support all qualified families in Can-avid. While the majority of beneficiaries have already received their assistance, teams are preparing to bring rice to remaining families in upstream barangays in the coming days to complete the distribution.

“We made a promise to ensure that no family in Can-avid goes without, and we are working tirelessly to keep that promise,” Mayor Teves said during a monitoring visit to Brgy. San Roque, one of the areas where distributions were held this week. “Even in our most remote barangays, our commitment to serve remains strong—this is what our slogan ‘Marig’on nga Kooperasyon. Serbisyo nga Matinumanon’—’Good Cooperation.’ Responsible Service’ is all about.”

The program, implemented in partnership with the national government, is part of the local government’s continuous efforts to support Can-avidnons facing economic challenges. Vice Mayor Hon. Wilfredo “Modoy” Busa, along with members of the Sangguniang Bayan, has been working closely with the Office of the Municipal Social Welfare and Development (OMSWD) to coordinate the distribution.

“The success we’ve seen so far is thanks to everyone who pitched in—from our MSWD staff who processed the lists to barangay officials who helped identify families in need to volunteers who spent their time ensuring everything runs smoothly,” Vice Mayor Busa noted. “This is what community cooperation looks like in action.”

Beneficiaries have expressed gratitude for the timely assistance, especially as families prepare for the upcoming planting season. Nanay Elena Dela Cruz, a resident of Brgy. Mabini shared, “This rice will help us so much—we can focus on preparing our fields without worrying about where our next meal will come from. The LGU really came through for our family and all our neighbors here.”

Teams are currently making arrangements to transport rice to upstream barangays, where rough roads and difficult terrain require extra planning to ensure safe and efficient delivery. OMSWD personnel are also conducting final checks to ensure all eligible families are included in the distribution.

“Every family matters to us, no matter how far they live from the town center,” Mayor Teves emphasized. “We will not stop until every sack of rice is delivered, and every Can-avidnon family knows that their local government is here to support them.”

The rice distribution initiative reflects the LGU’s commitment to accessible public service, with careful coordination and responsible implementation at the heart of all its programs.
