Marcos inspects Felipe Abrigo Memorial Hospital in Guiuan

Guiuan, Eastern Samar — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. led the inspection of the rehabilitated Felipe Abrigo Memorial Hospital (FAMH) in Guiuan, Eastern Samar, on Sept. 25.

The hospital rehabilitation was funded with $8.76 million from the South Korean government through the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). The provincial government contributed ₱109 million, while former Senator Sonny Angara provided an additional ₱200 million.

FAMH was destroyed by Super Typhoon Yolanda in 2013. While the hospital was being rebuilt, it continued providing medical services from a temporary facility in Barangay Cantahay.

The rehabilitation project included the reconstruction of the hospital building, installation of medical equipment and training for health personnel.

The project aims to upgrade FAMH to a Level 1 hospital and strengthen the healthcare network in the area.

Once fully operational, the hospital will provide expanded medical services to residents of Eastern Samar with upgraded facilities and equipment.

Marcos was accompanied during the inspection by Congresswoman Sheen Gonzales, DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara, DOH Secretary Edwin Mercado, DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian, Republic of Korea Ambassador to the Philippines Lee Dong-gy, KOICA Country Director Jung Youngsun, former Governor Ben Evardone and other government officials.

Eastern Samar Gov. RV Evardone said the hospital was scheduled to open on October 7, 2026.

Evardone said the reopening would be a major help to the province, where improving access to healthcare remains a priority of the provincial government.
