Honoring Bravery, Reclaiming History: Balangiga Marks 125 Years of its Legendary Encounter

Balangiga, Eastern Samar — A profound and historic day unfolded today in the quiet town of Balangiga, Eastern Samar, as the community gathered to mark the 125th anniversary of the Balangiga Encounter on September 28 – a defining moment of courage and resistance etched deeply into the soul of the nation. Against the backdrop of a legacy forged in bravery, leaders from across the province came together not merely to remember, but to honor the heroism of those who stood their ground and defended their home against foreign occupation.

The commemoration centered on the theme “Rediscovering the Balangiga Encounter” – a powerful invitation to revisit, reflect upon, and renew appreciation for the valiant stand that has come to symbolize Filipino pride and defiance in the face of oppression. At the heart of the solemn observance stood the revered Balangiga Encounter Monument, where Cabinet Secretary Benhur Abalos led the traditional wreath-laying ceremony as a tribute to the memory and sacrifice of the town’s forebears.

Joining him in this moving act of remembrance were Eastern Samar Governor Ralph Vincent Evardone, Balangiga Mayor Dana Flynch de Lira, PNP Provincial Director PCol. Orlando Gardiola, Vice Governor Maricar Sison-Goteesan, members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, and other local government officials.
