Tacloban City — The dry spell has caused an estimated P367 million in damage to rice farms and other crops in Eastern Visayas, affecting thousands of hectares of agricultural land, the Department of Agriculture (DA) reported Monday.
DA Eastern Visayas Regional Executive Director Rodel Macapanas said about 14,000 hectares of rain-fed rice farms and 3,000 hectares planted with other crops have been affected.
Most of the damage is partial, meaning crops have survived but are expected to produce less than usual, Macapanas said in an interview.
Five provinces—Leyte, Southern Leyte, Biliran, Samar, and Northern Samar—have reported damage. Eastern Samar has recorded only minimal impact, according to the DA.
Macapanas said the damage remains manageable because most rice crops planted in September and October are already nearing harvest.
He urged farmers in areas less affected by the dry spell to increase production to help the region reach its target of producing 800,000 metric tons of rice this year.
The DA is also encouraging farmers to plant crops that require less water.
“We will optimize production in favorable areas. We will also provide assistance to farmers who will plant crops identified as less water-intensive,” Macapanas said.
The DA regional office has requested P117 million for El Niño preparedness and mitigation measures, including the purchase of water pumps for rice farms that depend on rainfall.
Macapanas said the agency has redirected its regular programs to help farmers affected by dry conditions.
The regional office has also started preparing agricultural supplies, including drought-tolerant seeds and fertilizer, as well as irrigation assistance, for distribution when needed.
The DA is also strengthening crop insurance, credit assistance, and market support to help farmers protect their incomes, he added.
